Makie

Version 1.5.1-alpha · in Tinkerie 1.5.2-alphaAlpha

Design parts for your 3D printer by stacking simple shapes.

In plain words

Drop shapes onto the build plate, turn some of them into holes, and group them: the holes are cut out. That's all it takes to make a bracket, a box or a replacement knob. When it looks right, export an STL or 3MF for your slicer.

Your first five minutes

Try this first

  1. Show me an example

Click Show me an example on the welcome screen. Makie builds a hand-cranked 9:1 gearbox.

  2. Press Play

Open Motion and press Play to watch the gears turn. If parts would collide, Makie shows them in red.

  3. Make your own

Click Box in the library, click the bed, then drag the white handles to resize it.

  4. Export

Press Export to save an STL or 3MF for your slicer.

Features

Shapes and holes

The Tinkercad idea, with more to build from.

  • Box, cylinder, cone, sphere, dome, torus, tube, wedge, pyramid, star, capsule and more
  • 3D text with 34 open-licence fonts, embossed or engraved
  • Sketch your own outline in 2D, then extrude, twist, taper or revolve it
  • Any shape can be a hole. Group it with a solid and it's cut out
  • Screw holes placed on a face go all the way through

Threads that actually fit

Screws, nuts and threaded holes made for printing.

  • ISO metric, trapezoidal, square and buttress threads
  • Coarse, fine or custom pitch; multi-start; left or right hand
  • A fit clearance so printed parts screw together
  • Make matching screw / threaded hole creates the other half in one click

Hundreds of ready parts

Hardware, holes and mechanisms you don't have to model.

  • 33 hardware parts: bolts, nuts, washers, standoffs, bearings, heat-set inserts…
  • 35 smart holes: nut traps, magnet pockets, fan and stepper mounts, USB-C and HDMI cut-outs
  • 50 mechanical parts: gears, pulleys, cams, hinges, springs, knobs, brackets, boxes, jars
  • Hose fittings, cable channels, drag-chain links, IKEA SKÅDIS hooks and bins

Gears and motion

Design mechanisms, then check they work.

  • Spur, helical, herringbone, bevel, worm, rack, planetary, cycloidal and non-circular gears
  • A gear ratio calculator that adds the gears already meshed
  • Rotating and sliding joints, driven by gears, racks and lead screws
  • Live collision detection: a moving part stops the moment it hits another, just like the real thing would jam

Cases for your electronics

Mounts and enclosures for 70 boards and modules.

  • Raspberry Pi, Pico, Arduino, ESP32, XIAO, screens, sensors, relays, motors…
  • Mount plates, standoffs, snap-in trays, cases with port openings, lids with windows, bezels
  • Import any STL and Makie works out a case for it
  • Opens Wirie boards and builds a case around them, with a clash check

Ready to print

Checks and exports that save failed prints.

  • Pick your printer from about 70 models, or type your bed size
  • Print check: bed fit, overhangs, thin walls, floating parts, watertightness, weight
  • Print layout lays every part flat on the bed without changing your design
  • STL, OBJ and 3MF, including multi-colour 3MF for Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer (up to 16 filaments)

Good to know

Board sizes are typical published values, and clone boards vary. Check your own board before printing a tight-fitting case.
